The Coumadin Clinic provides ongoing care and monitoring of our existing patients who take Warfarin (Coumadin).
When used properly and following a doctor’s prescribed treatment methods, Warfarin (brand named Coumadin) is an effective anticoagulant or blood thinner. Warfarin/Coumadin is primarily used to treat blood clots in the veins and arteries. This makes it useful in reducing the risk of pressing health concerns like stroke and heart attack, but it can be dangerous if not monitored.
At the Coumadin Clinic at Stockton Cardiology, Coumadin patients are carefully monitored to maintain safe levels of the anticoagulant. Your cardiologist must ensure that your blood clotting ability is in the proper range.
To determine whether your blood is clotting at the safe therapeutic rate advised by your cardiologist, a prothrombin time (PT) test is given on a regular basis using a fingerstick blood test. The result is available immediately, and will determine your international normalized ratio (INR).
Your doctor can then adjust your prescription and/or recommend other appropriate treatments. At the Coumadin Clinic, we will also discuss any issues you may be having, and educate you about any symptoms to be aware of which may indicate a problem.
