Wearable Monitoring Devices
The cardiologists at Stockton Cardiology often use remote heart monitoring technology to diagnose or monitor heart conditions when there are symptoms of irregular heart beats. Wearable heart monitor devices can either transmit data in realtime for remote monitoring, or some may only record data which is then analyzed by your doctor after the device is returned. The type of monitoring needed will be determined by your doctor.
Telemetry
Telemetry monitoring involves wearing a mobile cardiac telemetry monitor that captures ECG data which is then transmitted to a Remote Operations Center for monitoring and analysis.
Implantable Loop Recorder
A loop recorder is a small device that a cardiologist implants beneath the skin on your chest during a minor, outpatient procedure. The device continuously records your heart rate and rhythm during your daily life. It helps diagnose arrhythmias that other tests, like an EKG, cannot detect. It can monitor your heart’s electrical activity 24 hours a day for up to three years. The loop recorder automatically records data and sends it to your cardiologist for review. Such nonstop monitoring helps diagnose abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias).
Patch Heart Monitor
The Bardy CAM™ patch heart monitor is a lightweight, wire-free monitoring device applied to the skin that continuously records every heartbeat into the device. It also enables you to note when you feel symptoms. The patch is to be worn continuously for the entire duration it was prescribed. It is waterproof, and should be kept on during exercise and showers. After it is returned, your doctor is able to analyze the rhythm of your heart during regular daily activity.
Holter Monitor
A Holter monitor is another heart monitor which records heart rhythms. It is a wearable heart monitor with several electrodes to attach to the chest. The device is worn for 1-2 days, during which the patient cannot bathe, as the device is not waterproof. The Holter monitor records heart rhythms, which can be analyzed by your doctor only after the device has been returned.
